Towards Zero Emissions Synergies Workshop: DT4GS & FLEXSHIP at the Forefront of Green Shipping Innovation

On December 10th, 2024, the Towards Zero Emissions Synergies Workshop took place at IST Lisbon, bringing together key stakeholders from the maritime sector to explore pathways toward zero-emission shipping. This dynamic event highlighted groundbreaking projects, including DT4GS (Digital Twins for Green Shipping) and FLEXSHIP (Modular Battery Systems for On-Board Integration and Operation), fostering collaboration through key presentations and interactive discussions.

FLEXSHIP: Advancing Modular Battery Systems

The FLEXSHIP presentation provided an overview of the project’s scope, partnerships, and work package structure. The discussion emphasized the development and testing of modular battery systems, with upcoming full-scale demonstrations on two vessels to validate their operational performance and effectiveness.

DT4GS: Pioneering Digital Twin Technology

The DT4GS session outlined the project’s methodology, focusing on the Open Model Library (OML) as a cornerstone of its digital twin framework. Additionally, key survey findings on skills and capacity-building for green shipping technologies were shared, highlighting the critical need for workforce development in the maritime industry.

Interactive Engagement: Live Quiz on Skills & Synergies

To promote active participation, the workshop featured a live quiz designed to stimulate discussions on skill development and cross-project collaboration. Key focus areas included:

Skills Assessment for Green Shipping Technologies:

  • Identifying competencies needed to operate vessels with modular battery systems (FLEXSHIP) and green digital twins (DT4GS).
  • Evaluating the most in-demand skills for maritime professionals and students.
  • Ranking the importance of soft skills in successfully adopting new technologies across the sector.

Synergy Building Across Projects:

Participants explored common areas for collaboration between DT4GS, FLEXSHIP, NH3CRAFT, LH2CRAFT, GAMMA, SAFeCRAFT, and RETROFIT55. Key synergy themes included:

  • Decarbonization & Electrification
  • Alternative Fuels & Fuel Mixes
  • Sustainability & Autonomous Shipping
  • Zero-Emission Maritime Operations
  • Crew Training & Optimization Systems
  • Offshore Supply Vessels & Fuel Cells

Charting the Path Forward

The workshop reinforced the importance of collaboration and skill-building to accelerate the transition to a zero-emission maritime future. The insights and connections established during this event will contribute to the evolution of green shipping technologies, ensuring a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry.
