Abstract
Management of the combined effects of several factors is needed to achieve the required ship operational performance towards emissions reduction (‘decarbonisation’) for green shipping. Identifying these factors, defining the effects of them on each other, assessing their importance, and selecting decarbonisation
solutions, require a suitable management framework. This paper discusses the potential of the recent IT paradigm of digital twins for the optimisation of ship performance, regarding decarbonisation as the ultimate goal. The management framework described in this paper is underpinned by a data-driven digital twinning platform and assists stakeholders to continuously optimise current ship operations as well as
evolve the next generation of energy efficient ships.
